Senior AI Backend Engineer
Location: Bay Area / Remote (with flexibility for global collaboration)Type: Full-time Position Summary:
As a Senior Software Engineer at Peer, you'll be at the forefront of building innovative AI-driven platforms that revolutionize clinical research and medicines development. Your expertise in designing complex systems and leveraging the latest AI tools will directly contribute to accelerating breakthroughs in healthcare. In this role, you’ll lead technical initiatives, mentor junior engineers, and collaborate with our offshore contractor team.
Key Responsibilities:
System Architecture & Development
Architect and develop scalable, maintainable software systems for clinical research applications.
Deliver key system components essential for the product launch within agreed timelines.
Ensure code quality and scalability to support rapid growth and future feature additions.
Solve complex technical challenges with innovative, AI-enhanced solutions.
Implement AI-driven features that improve system performance or user experience by measurable margins.
Contribute innovative ideas that enhance product competitiveness in the market.
AI-Powered Productivity
Master and integrate the latest generative AI tools into development workflows, amplifying team efficiency.
Introduce at least one new AI tool or workflow improvement within the first three months to boost development speed.
Demonstrate increased personal productivity by effectively leveraging AI tools.
Stay ahead of rapid AI advancements, championing their adoption across the organization.
Regularly share insights on emerging AI technologies with the team.
Advocate for and assist in integrating relevant AI advancements into our products.
Mentorship & Leadership
Guide and mentor junior team members, fostering a collaborative and growth-oriented engineering culture.
Provide mentorship that helps team members improve their skills, reflected in enhanced code quality.
Facilitate knowledge-sharing sessions or workshops quarterly.
Lead code reviews, share best practices, and inspire technical excellence across the team.
Conduct regular code reviews, reducing code issues by a target percentage over time.
Establish best practices that are adopted across the contractor team.
Cross-Team Collaboration
Coordinate with the offshore contractor team, ensuring alignment and progress through effective communication.
Maintain consistent communication, ensuring that project milestones are met on schedule.
Resolve cross-team issues promptly to prevent project delays.
Adapt to scheduling needs for global collaboration, including early morning and late-night meetings as required.
Attend at least 90% of scheduled cross-timezone meetings to facilitate seamless collaboration.
Ensure that time zone differences do not hinder project progress.
Startup Contribution

Demonstrate flexibility by effectively handling changing project needs and priorities.

Qualifications:
Technical Skills & Expertise
Proven experience designing and implementing complex, scalable software systems.
Strong programming skills in modern languages (e.g., Python, JavaScript/TypeScript, Go).
Proficiency in cloud platforms (AWS, Azure, GCP) and containerization (Docker, Kubernetes).
Deep understanding of GenAI frameworks and tools (e.g., OpenAI APIs, Langchain, Agentic frameworks).
Knowledge of software architecture, database design, and data protection best practices.
AI Proficiency
Track record of integrating generative AI tools into workflows to enhance productivity.
Passion for staying updated with the latest in AI and advocating for innovative adoption.
Leadership & Collaboration
Experience mentoring junior engineers and fostering a culture of learning.
Strong communication skills for working across distributed, global teams.
Flexibility to accommodate collaboration with offshore teams (India-based contractors).
Preferred Experience
Startup experience or exposure to dynamic, fast-paced environments.
Experience with designing, developing, or scaling enterprise software systems is a strong plus.
Familiarity with life sciences, clinical research, or regulated industries is a bonus.
